SOUTH CHESTERFIELD, Va. – Weather conditions vary from rain to sleet in the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) Richmond District. Ice has been reported on trees in some locations of the 14-county district, and slick conditions may be present Wednesday afternoon through the Thursday morning commute as temperatures fluctuate and pavement remains wet.

Richmond District crews continue to monitor roads around the clock for possible slick spots and debris from heavy tree branches. Through the evening and overnight crews will continue to monitor areas more likely to freeze first (including bridges, ramps, overpasses, turns and shaded areas) and treat as needed with a mix of salt and sand to melt ice and provide traction for drivers.  

Tips for drivers

• Be prepared to adjust travel Wednesday evening and Thursday morning. 
• Check local forecasts and resources such as 511 for the latest road conditions. 
• If you must travel, reduce your speed and use extra caution. 
• Do not use cruise control or follow other vehicles too closely.

VDOT’s Richmond District oversees snow removal activities on approximately 19,000 lane miles of roads in 14 counties in central Virginia: Amelia, Brunswick, Charles City, Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico (primary routes only), Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, New Kent, Nottoway, Powhatan and Prince George counties. Henrico County provides snow removal for their secondary roads (numbered 600 and above) and subdivision streets. Cities that provide their own snow removal include Colonial Heights, Hopewell, Petersburg and Richmond, and the towns of Ashland, Blackstone, Chase City and South Hill.
