SOUTH CHESTERFIELD—The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Richmond District is prepared to keep district roads safe during Hurricane Dorian. Crews are ready to respond to road hazards and damage resulting from the storm.

At this time, the southeast portion of the Richmond District and areas east of I-95 are expected to feel the heaviest impacts from Hurricane Dorian beginning Thursday afternoon into Friday. Ahead of the storm, VDOT Richmond crews fueled all necessary equipment and inspected and cleared drainage facilities. Throughout the storm, crews will continue to monitor district roads for high water, fallen trees and other debris, paying close attention to low-lying areas prone to flooding.

VDOT’s Richmond District oversees maintenance and construction activities on approximately 18,700 lane miles of roads in 14 counties in central Virginia: Amelia, Brunswick, Charles City, Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico (primary routes only), Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, New Kent, Nottoway, Powhatan and Prince George counties. Henrico County maintains their secondary roads (routes numbered 600 and above) and subdivision streets. Cities that provide their own road maintenance include Richmond, Colonial Heights, Petersburg and Hopewell, and the towns of Ashland, South Hill, Chase City and Blackstone.
