VDOT News - Richmond

HENRICO – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has finished implementing new traffic patterns at the I-64/Airport Drive (Route 156) bridge replacements and interchange improvements project in Henrico County. Drivers will notice the following when traveling through the interchange:

• New traffic signals are now activated on Airport Drive at the bottom of the newly constructed I-64 spur ramps (marked in green in image below).
• The ramp from Airport Drive south to I-64 east (marked in yellow in image below) is temporarily closed. A new left turn at the above mentioned spur will allow traffic to access I-64 east from Airport Drive south until the ramp reopens.
• Northbound Airport Drive traffic has shifted towards the southbound lanes to allow for bridge demolition on I-64.

The following ramps are permanently closed as part of the switch to a partial cloverleaf interchange. All I-64 east/west traffic will now use a new, single Exit 197 in each direction to access Airport Drive:

• The ramp from I-64 east to Airport Drive north/Exit 197B (marked in red in image below).
• The ramp from I-64 west to Airport Drive south/Exit 197A (marked in red in image below).

The primary purpose of the $35 million project is to replace the I-64 eastbound and westbound bridges over Airport Drive, increase vertical clearance on Airport Drive and perform all necessary approach work to accommodate this vertical increase. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be complete in late 2022.
