New Shared-Use Path along Route 29 in Merrifield
Continuous trail open along northbound Route 29 between Vaden Drive and Nutley Street

MERRIFIELD – Bicyclists and pedestrians now have a continuous shared-use path along northbound Route 29 between Vaden Drive and Nutley Street (Route 243), according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The Route 29 Northbound Bicycle and Pedestrian Improvements Project constructed missing segments of the shared-use path along the roughly one-third of a mile stretch of northbound Route 29, improving bicyclist and pedestrian access to the nearby Vienna Metro station and connecting to trails including in Towers Park.

To accommodate the new shared-use path, the Route 29 box culvert over a tributary of Accotink Creek just west of Nutley Street was extended.

Construction on the project began last November and is now substantially complete, with minor work occurring in the coming weeks until final completion with minimal impacts.

The $3.8 million project is financed with local funding and by part of the concession fee provided under the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project Comprehensive Agreement.

Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians are reminded to use caution when traveling in active work zones. Be alert to new traffic patterns and limit distractions.
