ASHBURN – The Virginia Department of Transportation and Loudoun County celebrated this afternoon the soon-to-be-open George Washington Boulevard extension from Research Place to Russell Branch Parkway via a new bridge over Route 7.

Scheduled to open to traffic later this fall, the quarter-mile George Washington Boulevard extension is a four-lane road/bridge with a shared-use path along one side and a sidewalk along the other.

Construction began in November 2021 on the Route 7/George Washington Boulevard Overpass project, which aims to:

• Improve operations on Route 7
• Relieve congestion at the Route 7 interchanges with Loudoun County Parkway and Ashburn Village Boulevard
• Improve accessibility for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians by connecting roads parallel to Route 7 (Riverside Parkway and George Washington Boulevard) with roads parallel to Route 28 (Pacific Boulevard)
• Improve access to the George Washington University Virginia Science and Technology Campus and the Strayer University Loudoun Campus

“VDOT is proud to provide ahead-of-schedule delivery of a new asset for the transportation network in this dynamic, high-tech region of Loudoun County,” said Bill Cuttler, P.E., VDOT's Northern Virginia Deputy District Engineer.

“Loudoun County is pleased to partner with VDOT on this project, which will reduce congestion and improve connectivity for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians in this important corridor,” said Phyllis Randall, Chair At-Large, Loudoun County Board of Supervisors.

The $30.1 million project is financed with federal, state and county funding. The construction contractor is Joseph B. Fay Co.
