FAIRFAX – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and Fairfax County broke ground today on multimodal improvements along Route 29 (Lee Highway) between Union Mill Road and Buckleys Gate Drive to improve safety, traffic flow and bicyclist and pedestrian accessibility and connectivity.

The project will reconstruct and widen 1.5 miles of roadway from four to six lanes, relieving a major bottleneck during AM and PM peak hours with lengthy backups occurring in particular at the signal for Stringfellow/Clifton roads (Route 645). The project will also correct vertical alignment to improve sight distance and provide connectivity to pedestrian/bicycle trails at the Fairfax County Parkway/West Ox Road interchange.

“VDOT is pleased to deliver important multimodal transportation projects that enhance living and working in this great community,” said Bill Cuttler, P.E., VDOT's Northern Virginia Deputy District Engineer. “We appreciate users' patience and attention to safety as we work toward our performance goals.”

“Transportation investments like this one remove barriers, create connections, and help people get where they're going safely,” said Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeffrey C. McKay. “This road widening project will reduce congestion for motorists and improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists by adding or improving shared-use paths on both sides of Route 29, improving crosswalks, and adding modified signals.”

The $97 million project is financed with federal, state (including Smart Scale) and county funding and the I-66 concession fee. Shirley/Dewberry is the design-build contractor for the project scheduled for completion in spring 2026.
