VDOT News - Hampton Roads

HAMPTON – Beginning as early as Sept. 24, contractor crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) are scheduled to implement a series of overnight ramp closures along I-64 as crews continue to set concrete barriers and restripe pavement markings as part of the construction for the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) Hampton Segment.

The scheduled work includes:

• Full closure of the off-ramp from I-64 east to Rip Rap Road (exit 265C) as early as Sept. 24 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• Full closure of the on-ramp from Settlers Landing Road/Woodland Road to I-64 east as early as Sept. 24-26 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• Full closure of the on-ramp from Settlers Landing Road/Woodland Road to I-64 west as early as Sept. 27-28 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

Signed detour routes will be in place to direct motorists. 

This construction work is weather- and schedule-dependent; therefore, this schedule is subject to change. 

The I-64 west traffic shift at the Hampton River bridge implemented earlier this month is estimated to remain in place through as early as summer 2024. The continuous, single-lane closures on I-64 in both directions between Settlers Landing Road/Woodland Road (exit 267) and west of Lasalle Avenue (exit 265) are estimated to be in place into 2026.

Motorists are encouraged to use I-664 as an alternate route to avoid the work area when possible and are reminded to use caution when traveling near work zones, obey posted speed limits, be alert to digital message signs and drive distraction-free.  

The HREL Hampton Segment will ultimately become a part of the overall HREL network, a continuous, 46-mile network of Express Lanes in each traffic direction on I-64, from east of Denbigh Boulevard in Newport News to the I-64/I-264/I-664 Bowers Hill interchange in Chesapeake. The HREL network is designed to transport more motorists through the region while helping to alleviate congestion and allowing motorists more travel options.
