FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Intersection improvements have opened to traffic ahead of schedule at Route 1 and Market Steet in Spotsylvania County.

The intersection is located on Route 1 immediately north of the Interstate 95 interchange at exit 126 (Spotsylvania).

The project's improvements include:

• Triple left turn lanes from westbound Market Street to Route 1 southbound
• A fourth lane on westbound Market Street for traffic turning right or traveling through
• New sidewalk on westbound Market Street, Route 1 southbound, and a short segment of Route 1 northbound
• Controlled pedestrian crossing signal equipment and crosswalks
• On Route 1 southbound, an additional lane for traffic turning right or traveling through ties into the I-95 northbound on-ramp south of the intersection

On the west side of the intersection, traffic exiting from a shared parking lot for several businesses will encounter a new traffic pattern as they enter Route 1. Vehicles entering the intersection from this parking area are limited to right turns and left turns only, and can no longer travel through the intersection to eastbound Market Street. While the majority of construction is complete on this project, crews will continue to work on traffic signal equipment and sidewalks through late November 2023. Periodic lane closures may be needed as construction is completed.

The $6 million project was scheduled to be completed in December 2023. It was federally funded through the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP).

The project contractor is J.L. Kent and Sons.
