FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Beginning Sunday night, Route 17 (Warrenton Road) northbound in Stafford County will be reduced to a single travel lane in the Hartwood area for an emergency project to replace two drainage pipes.

Northbound Route 17 travelers can expect brief delays in the work zone, which will be in place 24 hours a day once construction starts on Sunday, July 18, at approximately 8 p.m. The project is expected to take five days to complete.

Route 17 will be reduced to a single northbound travel lane between Route 649 (Richland Road) and Route 1716 (Ashburn Lane).

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and its contractor, Jones Brothers, are replacing deteriorated 24-inch and 36-inch corrugated metal drainage pipes. This replacement is necessary to ensure the stability of the road and to maintain the drainage system. Crews will install new concrete drainage pipes of a similar size, and repair and restore the road in affected areas. Later this summer, Route 17 is scheduled to be resurfaced with new asphalt in this area.

An average of 21,000 vehicles a day travel Route 17 between the Fauquier County line and the Hartwood Road intersection, according to a 2019 traffic count.

A crossover on Route 17 at Ashburn Lane and Tinsley Lane and will be closed during the emergency project, which will prohibit left turns to and from these secondary roads. Travelers on Ashburn Lane and Tinsley Lane should travel north or south on Route 17 to make a U-turn at the next available intersection.

Message boards will be posted on Route 17 to alert travelers to the lane closure for this emergency project, and the potential for delays ahead.
