FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Route 620 (Dunbrooke Road) in Essex County is now open after the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) replaced the structurally deficient bridge over Piscataway Creek ahead of schedule.

In Dec. 2019, VDOT closed Dunbrooke Road between Route 642 (Purkins Road) and Route 622 (Latanes Mill Road). 

Crews replaced the 1962 structure with a 40-foot-long concrete single slab bridge on new concrete abutments. 

The new bridge is nearly double the length of the previous crossing. It also has a smoother travel surface. 

The former timber deck structure had a weight restriction of 3 tons for all vehicle types. The new bridge has no weight limit restrictions. 

The $1.6 million project was expected to be complete in late Nov. 2020. 

Crews were able to reopen Dunbrooke Road today, Sept. 29, after a bridge safety inspection, two months ahead of schedule. 

The detour has been lifted and signs have been removed. 

Dunbrooke Road previously carried an average of 780 vehicles a day before it closed, according to a 2019 VDOT traffic count.
