ROUTE 3 ROAD SHOULDER, DRAINAGE WORK BEGINS IN SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY
Over the next 3 weeks, motorists should be alert for daytime single lane closures on Route 3 eastbound and westbound from Andora Drive and Corter Avenue to Orange County line

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Starting next week, Route 3 travelers should be alert for mobile, daytime lane closures in Spotsylvania County from the Andora Drive and Corter Avenue intersection west to the Orange County line.

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews will be cleaning roadside shoulders and ditches to improve drainage along Route 3 in Spotsylvania. Fresh shoulder stone will also be added.

The intensive maintenance effort will begin on Monday, March 23 at the Andora Drive and Corter Avenue intersection, and will advance along Route 3 westbound toward the Route 20 intersection. When crews reach the Orange County line, work will continue along Route 3 eastbound toward Andora Drive and Corter Avenue.

Work will be underway on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The work zone will be mobile and will require a right lane closure.

Weather permitting, crews will work along Route 3 on the following dates:

  • Monday, March 23 – Friday, March 27
  • Monday, March 30 – Friday, April 3
  • Monday, April 6 – Friday, April 10

Crews will use a piece of equipment known as an Athey Loader to remove debris, leaves and other material from the roadside. The operation will keep ditches open so water can drain away from the travel lanes during heavy rain.

The Athey Loader process requires coordination between several pieces of large construction equipment, including the loader, a motorgrader and a dump truck. This coordination allows the work zone to stay mobile. Staying on the move helps to accomplish the work faster, which reduces delays for travelers.
