FREDERICKSBURG, Va. –  Beginning Friday, May 1, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin work to rehabilitate the Route 17 southbound bridge over Dragon Run located at the Middlesex and Gloucester county line.

The $4.1 million project is funded by the State of Good Repair program, which seeks to improve the condition of structurally deficient bridges in Virginia.

The project will install a slightly wider bridge deck and new steel beams under the existing structure. It will also improve the bridge approach on Route 17 southbound.  

At the start of the 15-month project, drivers should expect intermittent single lane closures on Route 17 southbound at the bridge over Dragon Run. Signs and flaggers will direct traffic through the work zone.

As construction progresses, a permanent 24-hour single lane closure on Route 17 southbound will be required in the work zone.

The bridge rehabilitation project is expected to be complete in August 2021.
