FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Vehicle weight monitoring equipment is scheduled to be installed this month on Route 3 in Lancaster County at the approach to the Robert O. Norris Bridge.

Crews will be working along the shoulder of Route 3 in Lancaster to install the equipment during daytime hours on Monday, September 16 through Friday, September 20. The equipment is being installed approximately a half-mile north of the bridge.

During the week of Monday, September 23 through Friday, September 27, Route 3 will be reduced to a single lane overnight from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. on the Lancaster bridge approach. A flagging crew will direct one-way, alternating traffic through the work zone. Crews will be installing the vehicle weight sensor equipment in the pavement.

The equipment will help the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) gather data on the weight of vehicles crossing the Norris Bridge. Structural engineers will use the data to study the relationship between the weight of vehicles crossing the bridge and any associated impacts to the bridge condition. This information will be used to help VDOT plan routine bridge maintenance.

Motorists will not be required to stop at the vehicle weight monitoring equipment, which gathers data from vehicles traveling at speed. The equipment is embedded in the pavement, similar to equipment VDOT uses to gather vehicle traffic counts.

The Norris Bridge crosses the Rappahannock River and connects Lancaster and Middlesex counties. The bridge has a posted weight limit of 45 tons.
