FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – A new traffic signal that will control traffic entering and exiting  Interstate 95 southbound at Exit 118/Thornburg in Spotsylvania County will be activated on Tuesday, May 14.

The traffic signal on Route 606 (Mudd Tavern Road) at the I-95 southbound on- and off-ramps will flash starting tomorrow for approximately 48 hours to allow motorists to adjust to its presence.

On Thursday, May 16, the traffic signal will be placed into full color operation after the peak morning travel period.

The new traffic signal will be activated to control traffic entering and exiting I-95 southbound.

Message boards are posted to alert motorists to the new traffic signal.

Project Background

Construction to improve the Exit 118 interchange and replace the Mudd Tavern Road overpass began in October 2017.

The new I-95 overpass opened to traffic a year later. The new four-lane overpass, with turn lanes and wider shoulders, replaced a structurally deficient bridge with two travel lanes. All lanes on the new bridge will open when construction is complete.

The project seeks to reduce congestion, accommodate future growth and enhance safety in the Thornburg area. An offset diamond interchange design was selected to minimize the right-of-way required for the road and ramp improvements. 

The $22.4 million project is anticipated to be complete in summer 2019.
