RT. 695 BRIDGE IN LOUISA CO. REOPENS TO TRAFFIC
Hamilton Rd. structure’s weight limit reduced to 3 tons following repairs
CULPEPER — The Route 695 (Hamilton Road) bridge over the South Anna River in Louisa County reopened to traffic today following completion of repairs to the truss structure. The aging bridge was closed May 24 after an inspection revealed significant deterioration to one of the beams that support the deck, making the bridge unsafe to carry traffic.
The posted weight limit for vehicles is now three tons, reduced from the five-ton weight limit posted prior to the closure. The three-ton posting means the bridge is limited to passenger vehicles. Trucks, farm equipment, school buses, commercial and emergency vehicles exceed the posted weight limit.
The steel beam, timber deck bridge was built in 1929. Approximately 58 vehicles cross the bridge each day, according to the most recent traffic counts.
VDOT has an aggressive bridge inspection and safety program that goes beyond federal requirements. For more information about the VDOT bridge program see the agency’s web site: “Bridges in Virginia.”
