CULPEPER — Major highways across the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Culpeper District are clear of snow this morning but many secondary roads are icy with patches of frozen snow.

VDOT crews and contractors worked last night to plow secondary roads and neighborhood streets, making all roads passable for morning travel. Temperatures below freezing last night turned slush into icy patches overnight.

Main roads, including Interstate 64 in Albemarle and Louisa counties and I-66 in Fauquier, are clear of snow. Drivers may encounter black ice on bridges and at intersections, turn lanes and ramps. Even after plowing and treatment with sand and sand many secondary roads including neighborhood streets are in minor to moderate condition, with patches of packed snow and ice on the road surface.

Anyone who must travel early Wednesday is encouraged to use caution and to drive for the conditions by reducing speed and increasing following distance. Drivers are reminded to use VDOT’s free 511 tools to find out about current road conditions along their route before traveling.
