BRISTOL – As weekend weather models continue to develop, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews are preparing for a robust response to impending weather that is anticipated to arrive Sunday.

The 12-county Bristol District has approximately $16.3 million set aside for winter weather, with almost 700 pieces of equipment such as trucks, loaders and motor graders ready to clear roads of snow in the Bristol District.
VDOT Bristol crews are working to pretreat Interstate 81, Interstate 77 and high-volume primary highways in advance of the snow.

Key reminders:
• Be weather aware. Follow local forecast and visit 511Virginia.org for the latest road conditions before traveling. Checking the weather before significant travel and making decisions to leave earlier or later to avoid the storm may save drivers time and ensure safety.
• Allow crews time and space to plow and treat roads.
• Clear any snow and ice from your vehicle before driving.
• Ensure headlights are on and speeds align with conditions.

Interstates, primary roads and major secondary roads with vital emergency and public facilities, or those with high traffic volumes will be cleared first.
